On September 12, 2017, Apple held an event announcing their new products. They announced an LTE capable Apple Watch, a 4k Apple TV, and two new iPhones. The new iPhones are the iPhone 8 and the iPhone X. The iPhone 8 comes in the 4.7” display size and 5.5” iPhone Plus display size. The iPhone X only comes in a 5.8” display size and the screen takes up the entire front side of the phone. That’s right, the iPhone X doesn’t have a home button! This article will further examine the new products available, and whether or not they are worth the price.
The less expensive of the new models announced is the iPhone 8. The iPhone 8 starts at $699.00 for a 64GB model, and costs $849.00 for a 256GB model. Likewise, the iPhone 8 Plus also comes in a 64GB and 256GB model. The 64GB model costs $799.00, and the 256GB model costs a hefty $949.00. While the two sizes of the iPhone 8 are technically a less expensive option, they are by no means on the cheap side. The iPhone 8 is made entirely of glass and doesn’t have the metal backing we are used to. Apple claims that it is the “most durable glass ever in a smartphone”, but for a clumsy person like myself, I worry that I will still break it. I went and talked to a salesperson at T-Mobile, and they still recommend having a case and a screen protector if you are prone to breaking your phone, despite the fact that the glass is stronger. Other new features include wireless charging, new camera features, and an A11 Bionic chip.
The iPhone X is probably the most exciting new product that Apple has announced. However, it has a starting price of $999.00, which is intimidating to many. Despite the hefty price tag, it does have some pretty interesting new features. The one that I find the most impressive is the facial recognition software, which can unlock your phone, and use features such as Apple Pay. The front side of the iPhone is all glass, except for a small notch where the front facing camera is. Similar to the iPhone 8, the iPhone X also has an upgraded camera and wireless charging.
So should you upgrade your current phone? I think that depends on a few factors. If you are an Apple fanatic, and always want the newest thing, then the iPhone X is for you. Alternatively, if you don’t want to spend the extra money for the iPhone X, but want to upgrade, go with the iPhone 8 which has most of the same features. Another option for those who don’t have their hearts set on the iPhone 8 or X, is to upgrade to the iPhone 7. Typically after Apple launches new iPhones, they drop the prices of previous models. Basically, if you love Apple products and want the newest thing, buy the iPhone X. If you simply want to upgrade, I recommend purchasing either the iPhone 8 or the iPhone 7. Before deciding to upgrade, think carefully about what factors you’d need in an iPhone so as to make the right decision for you.
